Pool Heater Buying Guide: Gas, Heat Pump, or Both

The right heater choice depends less on the pool and more on how the pool is actually used: on-demand quick heat, or steady year-round comfort. Bridgeland and Towne Lake both route pool and backyard plans through an HOA architectural control committee before construction, and lakefront or lake-adjacent lots carry their own drainage and setback rules on top of that.

Gas Heaters: Fast, Expensive to Run

A gas heater burns natural gas or propane to heat water quickly, often raising temperature several degrees per hour regardless of outside air temperature. That makes it the right choice for occasional or on-demand heating, heating up for a weekend gathering rather than running constantly.

The tradeoff is operating cost: gas is the most expensive fuel per BTU of the common options, so running a gas heater continuously for months gets costly fast.

Heat Pumps: Slower, Efficient, Weather-Dependent

A heat pump extracts heat from the surrounding air rather than burning fuel, which makes it far cheaper to run but slower to heat (often a degree or two per hour) and less effective once air temperature drops into the 40s or below.

For the Houston area, where true cold is rare but the swim season runs most of the year, a heat pump is well suited to maintaining a comfortable temperature steadily rather than a fast, on-demand heat-up. Some homeowners pair both: a heat pump for everyday use, a gas heater as a backup for the rare cold front.
