Pool Pump Troubleshooting Guide

Most pump problems trace back to one of three things: air getting in, debris blocking flow, or a worn part, and the symptoms usually point to which. Bridgeland and Towne Lake both route pool and backyard plans through an HOA architectural control committee before construction, and lakefront or lake-adjacent lots carry their own drainage and setback rules on top of that.

A pump that will not prime, runs loud, or seems to run fine without actually circulating water is diagnosable in a specific order, from easiest/cheapest to most involved.

  1. Check the water level and skimmer

Low pool water level is the single most common cause of a pump losing prime; the skimmer needs to stay submerged to pull water, not air.

  2. Inspect and clean the pump basket and skimmer baskets

A clogged basket restricts flow and can cause the pump to run without actually moving much water, which shows up as a weak return jet.

  3. Check the lid O-ring and lid seal

A cracked or dry O-ring lets air into the system, which prevents priming even with clean baskets and a full pool; a thin film of O-ring lubricant and a properly seated lid solve most air-leak priming issues.

  4. Listen for the type of noise

A grinding or screeching noise usually points to a failing motor bearing; a rattling noise often points to debris in the impeller housing; a humming motor that will not spin can mean a seized shaft or capacitor issue.

  5. Check suction-side fittings for air leaks

Air bubbles visible in the pump basket or returning through jets point to a suction-side leak somewhere between the pool and the pump, not inside the pump itself; this needs a plumbing inspection rather than a pump repair.

  6. Call for equipment service if the issue is internal

Impeller wear, seal failure, or motor bearing issues are a repair/equipment job; running a failing pump to "see how long it lasts" usually ends with a motor replacement instead of a cheaper seal or bearing fix.

FAQs

Why does my pump run but nothing comes out of the jets?

That pattern usually means the pump is not primed (air in the system) or a valve is closed/misdirected somewhere in the plumbing; check skimmer suction and valve positions before assuming the pump itself has failed.

How long should a pool pump last?

A well-maintained residential pump motor typically lasts 8-12 years, though seals and bearings may need service sooner; a variable-speed pump often lasts longer since it runs at lower RPM most of the time, reducing wear.
